絵が上手くなりたい人へ！絵の基礎を学ぶのに役立った4冊 | Learning to Draw? 4 Art Books That Helped Me Build My Fundamentals

 

絵を描くのに、最初から特別な才能が必要なわけではありません。興味を持つことや、練習を重ねること、そして自分に合った学び方を見つけることも大切です。

私が絵を描き始めたのは2019年です。それまでは高校まで理系のクラスで物理・化学・生物を学んでいて、絵を描くのは気分転換のようなものでした。その後、福岡でマンガを学ぶようになり、授業で習ったことだけでなく、もっと自分の画力を伸ばしたいと思うようになりました。

そんなときに出会った技法書は、今でも私の学習を支えてくれる存在です。

美術を専門的に学んだ経験がなかったこともあり、日本語の文章だけでは理解しにくかったり、作例が少ないとイメージしづらかったりすることもありました。だからこそ、図やイラストを使って手順を分かりやすく解説してくれる本は、とても心強かったです。

今回は、背景の描き方から色や光の表現、人体の構造まで、私が参考にしてきた4冊を紹介します。授業や実際に手を動かして練習することも大切ですが、技法書が一冊あると、分からないことを調べたいときや復習したいときにも便利ですよ！

You don’t have to be naturally talented to start drawing. Sometimes, all you need is curiosity, practice and help along the way.

I actually started drawing in 2019. Before that, until high school, I was in science stream class learning Physics, Chemistry, Biology. I treated drawing as something to de-stress. When I later studied Manga in Fukuoka, I wanted to improve my drawing skills beyond what I learned in class.

That’s when art books became some of my learning companions until now.

As someone who didn’t have any art background, I sometimes found it difficult to understand explanations written only in Japanese, especially when there weren’t enough visual examples. Books with clear explanations, illustrations and step-by-step guidance made learning much easier for me.

I would like to introduce four books that helped me explore different aspects of drawing, from backgrounds and colours to anatomy. They are not a replacement for lessons or practice, but they can be great resources to keep by your desk and refer to whenever you need them.

『背景作画　改訂版 ゼロから学ぶプロの技 神技作画シリーズ』| Learn How Different Elements Come Together to Create a Background.

この本で面白いと感じたのは、背景イラストをいくつかのパーツに分けて解説しているところです。

例えば、夕焼けの背景を木や空、岩、壁、道路などの要素に分けて紹介しているページがあります。完成したイラストだけでなく、それぞれのパーツにも注目することで、背景全体がどのように組み立てられているのかを理解しやすくなります。

実践的な作例やチュートリアルも掲載されているので、背景を描くときに、どこから手をつければいいか迷ってしまう人にもおすすめです。風景を描くのが好きな人は、ぜひチェックしてみてください！

One thing I found interesting about this book how it breaks down a background illustration into smaller parts. For example, one of the pages shows a finished sunset scene and separates it into individual elements such as trees, rocks, walls, and even roads. Just by looking at how these elements are put together, it’s easier to understand how a complete background illustration is constructed. 

The book also includes practical tutorials and example giving readers a closer look at how different elements can be used in an illustration. So, if you enjoy drawing scenery but not sure how to approach a complete background, this book may help you understand how to build one by looking at its individual components.

学生の頃に買っておけばよかった！と思う一冊です。

この本のおかげで、素材によって光や色の反射の仕方が違うことを、以前より理解できるようになりました。

デッサンの授業では、果物や靴、ガラス製品など、布・金属・ガラスといったさまざまな素材のものを描く機会があります。鉛筆や水彩で描く場合でも、影をどのくらい濃くするのか、どこに光を入れるのか、ガラス瓶越しに見えるプラスチックのボールをどう表現するのかなど、悩むことがたくさんありました。

この本を読んでからは、素材ごとの光の当たり方や色の見え方を、以前より意識できるようになりました。

モノクロのデッサンだけでなく、カラーイラストの表現力も伸ばしたい人におすすめです。色を選ぶだけでなく、光によって物の見え方がどう変わるのかを学ぶきっかけになると思います。

This is one of those books that I wish I had bought earlier when I was studying!

It helped me to understand how different materials reflect light and colours. Before learning more about this subject, I didn’t always know how to approach lighting when drawing objects made from different materials. For example, during Dessan (Figure drawing class), we have to draw fruits, glass, shoes and many more which consist of different material and structure like cloth, metal, wax, etc. Even though it was drawn using pencil and watercolour, I didn’t know how dark should the shadow be, where should I add the lighting, how the plastic ball looks behind glass bottle.

With this book, it helps me to understand better. So if you want improve your colour illustrations (not only in monochrome), this book is definitely worth looking into. It could help you by not only choosing colours but also how light changes. 

『考えて上手くなる　背景の描き方』| Learn to Approach Background Drawing One Step at a Time

こちらは最近購入した本ですが、解説が分かりやすく、描き方の流れを理解しやすいと感じました。

特に印象に残ったのは、葉っぱの描き方を紹介しているページです。完成形を見せるだけでなく、まずシルエットを作り、質感を加え、影や光を入れるというように、段階ごとに説明されています。

こうした手順を追って学べるので、完成した絵をそのまま真似するだけでなく、描くときに何を意識すればいいのかも考えやすくなります。

背景を描いていて、どこから始めればいいか分からなくなることがある人や、基礎から少しずつ学びたい人におすすめの一冊です。

I bought this book quite recently and I found that it’s explanations are easy to follow.

An example that caught my attention was its tutorial on drawing leaves. Rather than simply showing the finished result, the pages explain the process through different stages including creating the basic silhouette, adding texture and considering shadows and light.

I found that this approach is helpful because it gives me a clearer idea of what to think while drawing rather than just trying to copy the final image. So if you are a beginner who sometimes feels lost when drawing backgrounds, this book may help you.

人物を描くなら、人体の構造を理解することも大切です。そこで紹介したいのが、人体デッサンの参考書としておなじみの「モルフォ」シリーズです。NDSの総合アニメ・デジタルイラスト学ぶ学生にも使われています。

この本には、人体の構造を詳しく描いたイラストが掲載されています。例えば、上半身の筋肉を部位ごとに紹介したページや、さまざまな角度から人体を描いた作例などがあり、筋肉の位置や身体のつながりを観察するのに役立ちます。

デッサンを繰り返して、いろいろな角度から人体を描く練習をしておくと、キャラクターを描くときにも活かせます。筋肉の流れや脂肪による身体のライン、関節の動きなどを少しずつ理解できれば、難しいポーズにも挑戦しやすくなるはずです。

キャラクターを描くのが好きな人や、人物のデッサン力を伸ばしたい人は、ぜひ参考にしてみてください！

Understanding human anatomy is crucial when drawing figures. Therefore, I’d like to introduce the Morpho series, a well-known reference book for figure drawing. It’s also used by NDS Comprehensive Animation and Digital Illustration Course.

This book contains detailed illustrations of human anatomy. For example, it includes pages introducing the muscles of the upper body by part, and examples of figures drawn from various angles, which are helpful for observing muscle placement and body connections.. 

Practicing drawing the human body from various angles through repeated practice will be beneficial when drawing characters. Gradually understanding muscle flow, body lines created by fat, and joint movements will make it easier to tackle more difficult poses.

まとめ | Conclusion

気になる技法書があっても、最初から全部そろえる必要はありません。まずは、自分が苦手だと感じていることや、もっと上達したい分野から選んでみましょう。

そして、本を読んで終わりにするのではなく、学んだことを実際に描いて試してみるのも大切です。授業で先生に質問したり、失敗したところを描き直したりしながら、少しずつ自分の力にしていきましょう。失敗も、次に上達するためのヒントになります。

私も専門的に美術を学んだ経験がないところから絵を始め、卒業した今でも新しい発見があります。上達のペースは人それぞれなので、焦らず、自分のペースで描くことを楽しんでくださいね。

You don’t need to buy every art book you come across. Start with the subject that you find most challenging or the skills that you want to improve first.

And remember, books are there to support your learning. Try applying what you’ve read to your own drawings, ask questions during class and don’t be afraid to make mistakes along the way cause mistakes will help you to learn and improve faster. 

I started drawing without formal art background previously and I’m still learning new things even after graduating. Everyone has their own pace so take your time and enjoy the process.
